The message is clear and simple yet another year, don’t drive impaired.
Prince George RCMP launched its holiday CounterAttack campaign last night (Dec. 7) in several locations across the city, including Highway 16 east by the Correctional Centre.
Vehicles were stopped by police as they checked for drivers under the influence, and other driving-related offences as well, but it appeared local residents cooperated with the law.
“Impaired driving enforcement is one of our national priorities and despite being completely preventable, impaired driving still continues to be one of the leading causes of fatalities across the province,” said Cpl. Sonja Blom.
“It’s very positive. The police are out here trying to keep everyone safe on the roadways this holiday season, making sure everybody gets home safe to their families.”
Blom said Saturday was also fitting to start CounterAttack as it marked National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day.
“In the month of December, motorists in Prince George can expect to see a heightened police presence in many areas of our city. Our police officers are specifically targeting drivers who are impaired by alcohol or any other drug.”
ICBC representatives and RCMP Citizens on Patrol volunteers were also helping reward good drivers with goodies and friendly reminders of the dangers of impaired driving.
“I think it's fantastic,” said Blom. “It’s super important for us as police to have partners because we can’t do all by ourselves and its nice to have that help.”
Police recommend calling a cab, assigning a designated driver or utilize Operation Red Nose Prince George if you plan on drinking this holiday season.
Operation Red Nose is offering safe rides Dec. 13-14, Dec. 20-21 and on New Year’s Eve.
