Students from College Heights Elementary are showing the country what they know about Canadian music.

Every fall, CBC Music in association with MusicCounts – the charity of the Juno Awards – launches a contest to engage music classes across the country with Canadian music.

It’s called the Canadian Music Class Challenge.

This year, David Schulte’s Division 4 class (a grade three/four split) from College Heights Elementary has tossed its hat in the ring.

Each year, CBC Music pre-approves a list of Canadian songs, then asks music teachers to pick one and teach their classes a cover version.

It could be a note-for-note cover, or something completely their own.

Once a class performance of the song has been recorded on video, it gets uploaded to CBC Music Class' YouTube channel and three judges choose six winners, each receiving a $5,000 classroom recording kit.

Shulte’s class chose to cover “I’s the B’y” and “You Got to Run” with a mix of music, drumming, dancing and singing.

The video’s description explains the class spends each day examining and singing songs from contemporary and modern Canadian artists.

Class favourites include Neil Young, John K. Samson, and Stompin’ Tom.
