A section of Fifth Avenue was closed to traffic on Wednesday morning, as city crews worked to repair a water main break.
As of 10:30 a.m., city crews were working in the section of Fifth Avenue between Watrous Street and Melvillle Avenue. Both eastbound lanes were closed to traffic in that area.
A statement from the City of Prince George said the break in a 300 mm water main line was reported Wednesday morning at roughly 7-7:30 a.m.
“Crews are at the location right now trying to get the water turned off to allow them to fix the main,” a statement issue by the city said. “There is minimal water service disruption to residences and businesses in the area. The City expects the main to be fixed and traffic to resume by the end of the day.”
Once the main is fixed and filled in, crews will be called in to grade and plow any accumulated ice and snow in the area, as well as distribute sand and salt.
“Water main breaks are not uncommon during extremely cold weather events. Crews take extensive precautions to stay safe and warm, including wearing proper PPE and equipment. Crews work in teams of four, in short, half-hour shifts and are then required to spend time warming up in their vehicles,” the city statement said. “The City of Prince George appreciates the patience of residents as we complete this operation and for driving cautiously around crews and equipment.”
