A pair of evacuation alerts in answer to a wildfire near Wells and Barkerville are no longer in effect and an evacuation order has been downgraded.
The steps were taken Monday afternoon, roughly four days after they were issued by the District of Wells and Cariboo Regional District in response to a wildfire on Cornish Mountain about five kilometres north of Jack of Clubs Lake.
An evacuation order for the northeast corner of the District of Wells was downgraded to an alert.
The fire remained listed as out of control by the BC Wildfire Service but appeared to have stabilized at 70 hectares.
"Fire behaviour continues to display Rank 1 which means it is a smouldering ground fire," BCWS posted on Monday.
"A fire guard has been completed, with a fuel free that has been established around entire fire perimeter. Ground crews are mopping up to 30 feet from the fire's edge and 50 feet where there is more heat that is being produced. Mop up is when the ground crews look for remaining hot spots and then extinguish them with water or soil.
"Structure protection personnel are on site to conduct assessments and will setup sprinkler systems or remove combustible materials near structures, where appropriate."
The weather remained stable with a ridge of high pressure over the area. However, a risk of thunderstorms remained.
Barkerville is an historic pioneer village and tourism attraction south of Prince George, featuring original buildings and offering visitors a look at B.C. history.
