Mounties in Williams Lake are asking the public to stay indoors while they search for a man considered to be armed and dangerous.

In a release, Cpl. Madonna Saunderson says police received a call of an erratic driver yesterday (June 2) at roughly 2:21 p.m. in the Wildwood area.

An unidentified man was allegedly driving a red 2001 Chevrolet Impala southbound on Highway 97 while speeding in a dangerous manner on double solid lines with ongoing traffic in view.

Police then tried to stop the car and driver but were unsuccessful, and Saunderson says the vehicle collided with a police car while Mounties continued to try and stop the suspect.

RCMP stopped pursuing the suspect as he took off along Highway 97 towards the Dog Creek area.

The Crime Reduction Unit then discovered the suspect's vehicle abandoned in a rural wooded area just outside the city.

Although many resources including RCMP helicopter, police dog services, Alexis Creek RCMP and all-terrain vehicles, they were not able to find the suspect.

"This remains a high priority investigation for the Williams Lake RCMP and the safety of our community is of the upmost importance" S/Sgt. Del Byron with Williams Lake RCMP adds in the release.

Police asked the public to stay indoors yesterday and are asking the public to be aware of their surroundings and if anything suspicious is seen to immediately call 9-1-1.

The public is being asked to contact Williams Lake RCMP at 250-392-6211 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 if they have any information.
