During The Citizen's coffee chat Tuesday at Books & Co. a former northerner who recently returned to Prince George raised eyebrows as she expressed her fondness for wicked, wintry days that drive so many to distraction.

Ellen Huse, who grew up in Mackenzie and Prince George, truly welcomes the mountains of snow, the biting north winds and the fraudulent groundhog that promised most of Canada an early spring.

"I love the snow. I hate the rain. I'm so glad to be back in the cold. I'm shovelling away. I'm home," Huse said after spending six years in the Lower Mainland

She's rented a home on Regis Road in College Heights, and raves about her new neighbours with their true northern spirits.

"They really all take care of each other like we used to do in Mackenzie. The neighbours have been great to snow-blow my driveway during those days when we have 16 inches of snow.

"When I offered to pay for the work, one neighbour said,'No, you can't pay me. Neighbours don't pay neighbours. This isn't Kansas, you know," said Huse who plans on earning a Master's degree at UNBC next year, as well as getting back into skiiing and learning the art of snow boarding.
