Sylvain Victor Roy, 48, was found dead in the bushes near an alley July 29. Patrick Mathewsie, 44, has been charged with manslaughter in Roy's death. Police have determined that Roy and Mathewsie were familiar with each other; according to Roy's family, the men were living together even though they hadn't known each other more than a couple months.

The undeveloped and overgrown lot where Roy's body was discovered is often frequented by people drinking in public, say neighbours. It was a scene those behind the closed sign that hung on the door of Shepherd's Corner Thursday afternoon tried to put out of their minds while they sipped coffee and ate cake, trying to remember a man his sister-in-law said was "so funny", liked to work with his hands, loved the outdoors and would never hurt the proverbial fly.

"He was an unbelievably good man," said Linda Esau, who introduced Roy to her sister Elizabeth Fisher.
