There’s a new goaltender on the Cougars’ block.
Ty Young recently signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement with Prince George beginning in the 2021-22 season, becoming the sixth player from the 2004 class to commit to the Cats since the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft.
The Coaldale, Alta. product joins Carter MacAdams in signing with the Cougars in under a two-week span and other signed 2019 draftees Keaton Dowhaniuk, Koehn Ziemmer, Jaren Brinson and Kyren Gronick.
He was taken 158th overall in the eighth round that year.
Since then, the 16-year-old has thrived with the Lethbridge Under-18 AAA Hurricanes with a combined record of 11-5-4 in two seasons in the Alberta Elite Hockey League, plus 5-3 in the 2020 playoffs
“Ty is another goaltender in our system that has a great mix of size and athleticism and has the potential to be a top-level netminder in our league,” said Cougars’ Director of Scouting Bob Simmonds in a team release.
“He has a great work ethic and has shown a lot of growth in his game over the last two seasons.”
In 2019-20, Young maintained a 2.54 goals-against average and .913 save-percentage.
He’s one of five goaltenders in the Prince George Cougars’ prospects pool, in addition to Dylan Johnson, Liam Hallett, Logan Terness and Jacob Herman.
A WHL standard agreement entitles a player to a university scholarship after their major junior careers are over, as well as medical and dental insurance coverage, hockey equipment and billets.
The Cougars are waiting for a committed 24-game schedule to begin for an altered 2020-21 season amid COVID-19.
