BC ski crossers claim World Cup wins, PG's Rowell eliminated

Marielle Thompson of Whistler won her second World Cup race of the season Tuesday in Arosa, Switzerland.

It was a great day for Canada. but not one of the better ones for Prince George ski cross racer Gavin Rowell.

In the second race of the World Cup season Tuesday in Arosa, Switzerland, Canadian women swept the medal podium.

Marielle Thompson of Whistler won gold,  India Sherret of Cranbrook took silver and Hannah Schmidt of Ottawa claimed bronze.

Abby McEwen of Edmonton was fourth in the semifinal and finished second in the small final.

It was the 33rd victory and 70th medal of Thompson’s World Cup career. The 32-year-old won the season-opening race last week in Val Thorens, France.

In the men’s race Tuesday, Reece Howden of Cultus Lake, BC captured gold in a photo  finish ahead of reigning world champion Simone Deromedis of Italy.

Sweden's David Mobaerg won bronze, just ahead of Jared Schmidt of Ottawa.

In the first round of heats, Rowell finished third in a field of three, while Howden and Cornell Renn of Germany advanced.

Rowell, a former Prince George Alpine Ski Team member, qualified 33rd in a field of 54.

The World Cup tour moves in Innichen, Italy for the next race, which starts with qualifying on Thursday.
