Prince George biathlete Moira Green began her quest for success at the world junior/youth championships Thursday in Oestersund, Sweden and finished 35th in a field of 91 racers in the women’s 12.5-kilometre individual race.
The 20-year-old Caledonia Nordic Ski Club member shot 15-for-20 (1+2+1+1) and stopped the clock 6:09.7 behind the gold-medal pace set by Norwegian Celia Henaff, who shot clean and completed the course in 34 minutes five seconds.
Amandine Morgan of Norway (+22.5, 0+0+0+1) and Fabian Carpella of Italy (+1:05.5, 0+0+0+1) won silver and bronze respectively.
Eva Chlepkova of Calgary (+5:08.2, 1+0+0+1) was the top Canadian in 29th place.
Alexandria Hulshof of Calgary (+6:35.4, 0+2+0+1) was 43rd and Anna Perry of Calgary (+10:25.8, 0+2+0+2) placed 71st.
In the junior men’s 15 km individual race Thursday, Norway had a 1-2 finish. Sivert Gerhardsen went 20-for-20 on the range and won gold in 36:54.5, finishing 1:22.6 ahead of teammate Kasper Kalkenberg (0+0+0+1). James Pacal of Switzerland (+1:35.1,0+0+0+0) claimed bronze.
Caledonia club member Liam Simons of Prince George, 20, was lapped after shooting six-for-10 in two bouts and finished 101st. Jean-Nicolas De Broek of Saint Foy, Que. (+6:07.5, 0+1+2+1) was the top Canadian in 40th place.
In other Canadian results, Jasper Fleming of Squamish was 99th, and Gavin Johnston of Campbell River was 104th. The race drew 104 entrants.
Racing in Oestersund resumes Friday with the junior and youth mixed relay. The junior men’s sprint is scheduled for Saturday and the junior women’s sprint is on Sunday.
