With one shot, the only shot on goal in overtime, Lucas Woodbeck gave the Cariboo Cougars a chance for a New Year’s Day stay in Calgary.
The 17-year-old forward from Prince George scored 2:31 into OT to give the Cariboo Cougars a 3-2 win over the Okotoks Beaumark Oilers Sunday afternoon at the Circle K Classic U18 hockey tournament.
The Cougars overcame a 2-0 deficit to pull even with the Oilers in the second period.
Jaxson Larmand, with his third of the tournament 47 seconds into the second period, got the Cougars offence stoked, and Jack Tidsbury tied it up at the 11:32 mark with his second goal in three games.
Carter Kelly and Tate Hanson, on an Oiler power play, gave the Alberta team the early lead.
Jaxon Dikur made 22 saves to earn the victory in goal for the Cougars, who outshot their opponents 28-24.
The Cougars opened with an 8-5 loss to Sioux Falls, then beat Detroit 6-3.
Cariboo, the first-place team in the BC Elite Hockey League, advanced to the round of 16 playoffs and will take on the two-time defending-champion Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres of Faribault, Minn., Monday afternoon (3 p.m. PT).
Through three preliminary round games the Sabres outscored their opponents a combined 27-8. Shattuck-St Mary’s ended Sunday’s slate of games with a 10-1 win over Sherwood Park.
