Duchess Park loses heartbreaking semifinal, will play Vernon for bronze

The Duchess Park Condors will be playing for bronze.

They lost 55-52 in Friday's semifinal round to the Sa-Hali Sabres of Kamloops at the BC triple-A girls basketball provincial championship in Langley.

The Sabres grabbed a 53-48 lead in the fourth quarter with three straight buckets and the Condors hit on two of their shots to make it a one-point game, but that's as close as it got. Forced to foul in the dying seconds, the Condors were powerless to stop Nevena Nagic, who hit both her free throws to ice it.

Nagic led the Sabres with 25 points. Zahra Ngago shot 26 for Duchess Park.

The Condors will take on the Vernon Panthers in the bronze-medal game Saturday at 1 p.m.

Meanwhile, the College Heights Cougars and Cedars Christian Eagles will both be playing for fifth place on Saturday.

Cedars advanced in the single-A tournament with a 66-43 win over the Ucluelet Warriors Friday afternoon.

Chloe McEwen racked up a game-high 19 points for the Eagles, 12 of which came in the second half. Jasmine Vigar also saved her best for last, scoring all 10 of her points in the third and fourth quarters. Mila Johnson also reached double figures with 11 points and Paige Kynoch had eight.

The Eagles will face Kings Christian Thunder of Salmon Arm Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The Thunder defeated Bulkley Valley Christian of Smithers 49-23 on Friday.

In triple-A action, College Heights defeated the R.A. McMath Wildcats of Richmond 73-51 Friday morning to move on to the fifth-place playoff Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against the Mark Isfeld Ice of Courtenay.

Summer Toor proved deadly from long range to lead the College Heights attack, hitting seven threes to finish with 21 points. Lorenn Caceres collected 19 points and Kayleigh Kennedy had 11. Mirella Fernandes Boshell picked up a team-high 17 points for the Wildcats.

The Ice defeated Robert Bateman Timberwolves 76-62 Friday morning to qualify to play College Heights.

The Cougars (2-1) lost 51-46 in the quarterfinal round to the Vernon Panthers, who scored eight unanswered points in the fourth quarter to erase a two point deficit and clinch the victory.

The top-ranked MEI Eagles of Abbotsford booked their spot in the triple-A championship game when they defeated Vernon Panthers 64-55.

Saturday’s final will be played at 5:30 p.m.

In other single-A results Friday, the Fort St. James Falcons (1-2) defeated John Knox Christian Hawks of New Westminster 63-42.

Leah Wadell scored a game-high 24 points and Pauline de Castor had a 21- point game for Fort St. James.

The Falcons will play for 13th place when they meet Southpointe Academy Titans of Delta Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

In Friday’s semifinal round, Pacific Christian Pacers of Victoria defeated Unity Christian Flames of Chilliwack 50-23. The Pacers advance to Saturday 1 p.m. final against the Sir Alexander Mackenzie-Credo Christian semifinal winner

At the double-A girls tournament, the Nechako Valley Vikings of Vanderhoof (0-2) will take on Hazleton Spartans Friday at 7 p.m. in the battle for 15th place.
