College Heights, Cedars, PGSS getting amped for high school provincials

Vanderhoof schools Nechako Valley and Northside also in action at provincial boys basketball tournaments this week in Langley

The North Central zone triple-A boys basketball champion College Heights Cougars get their first kick at the provincial can Wednesday afternoon in Langley.

Ranked 14th out of 16 teams, the Cougars, under head coach Jordan Yu, will have their hands full taking on the third-ranked St. Patrick’s Celtics of Vancouver in their opener at 1:15 p.m.

St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights of  Burnaby carry the top seed into the tournament.

All four tiers of the senior boys provincial tournaments are being played at Langley Events Centre this week.

In the single-A division, the 13th-ranked Northside Christian Northstars of Vanderhoof, coached by Brent Yoder, will face No. 4 Southpointe Academy Titans of Delta Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

The Cedars Christan Eagles, coached by Jeff Ludditt, are ranked 14th and they’ll take on No. 3 Unity Christian Flames of Chilliwack at 1:15 p.m.

Str. John’s Eagles of Vancouver are ranked No. 1.

The Nechako Valley Vikings of Vanderhoof will represent North Central at the double-A provincials as four-time zone champions, with coach Gary Simrose calling the shots. Ranked No. 14, the Vikings play the defending-champion Collingwood Cavaliers of West Vancouver, ranked No. 3, Wednesday at 11:45 a.m.

Pacific Academy Breakers of Surrey are seeded first.

In quad-A, coach Justin Rodger is preparing the zone-champion Prince George Polars, ranked No. 15, for a tough test against No. 2 Dover Bay Dolphins of Nanaimo Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.

Spectrum Community Thunder of Victoria, the defending champs, are ranked No. 1.

All the medal matches will be played on Saturday.
