For the second year in a row, the Duchess Park Condors will take flight at the provincial championship tournament.

Saturday night, on their home court, the Condors claimed the junior boys basketball zone title. In the final of the eight-team event, they beat the fatigued College Heights Cougars 50-32. Provincials are March 2-4 at St. Michaels University School in Victoria.

"Our goal is to go down there and compete," said Condors coach Dave Holmes.

"Last year we went in ranked 13th and had to play the No. 4 seed [in our first game] and we gave them a good scare. We were down five with three minutes left."

In the zone final, the Condors and Cougars were tied with about three minutes left in the second quarter but Duchess then went on an 11-2 run.

"We changed up our defence -- just created a bit more pressure on them and [we got] a few turnovers and we were able to translate those into some fast-break hoops," Holmes said. "At that point, I think basically their tanks were starting to run on empty."

The Condors held the lead the rest of the way.

The Cougars were playing their third game of the day because they had lost earlier in the tournament and fallen to the B side of the draw.
