On Wednesday the Cougars acquired 18-year-old winger Evan Groening in a trade from the Brandon Wheat Kings.

The wheeling and dealing is done for the season as the Cougars made one more trade to acquire an 18-year-old forward before the WHL roster deadline Wednesday afternoon.

They picked up Evan Groening from the Brandon Wheat Kings, sending the Wheaties their 10th-round selection in the 2027 WHL Prospects Draft.

The native of Niverville, Man. has played 74 games over three seasons in his WHL career with Brandon, collecting nine goals, three assists and 42 penalty minutes. The six-foot-one, 176-pound winger has been playing in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League this season with the Virden Oil Capitals and had four goals and five assists in seven games.

Brandon drafted him in the ninth round, 177th overall in 2020.

He’s the third player the Cougars have acquired through trades over the past two weeks.

On Dec. 27 they added 20-year-old defenceman Chase Pauls from the Lethbridge Hurricanes and on Dec. 31 they acquired 19-year-old forward Borya Valis from the Regina Pats.

The Cougars return to CN Centre this Friday and Saturday to face the Kelowna Rockets.
