Cougars end successful roadtrip with loss to Giants

Cats won five of six road games and had their seven-game win streak snapped in Langley

The streak is over.

The Vancouver Giants did the deed on home ice Sunday afternoon, taking advantage of a tired Prince George Cougars hockey team playing its third game in less than three days, and they ended the Cougars’ seven-game winning streak, outscoring the Cats 3-1.

Prince George native Cameron Schmidt fired up the Giants’ offence when he tied the game 35 seconds into the second period with his 36th goal. Schmidt, expected to be one of the high picks in the NHL draft in June, also drew an assist for his team-leading 71st point.

Connor Levis scored the winner, firing a centring pass from the slot through the legs of Prince George goalie Josh Ravensbergen with 4:25 gone in the third period.

Mazden Leslie, into an empty net, completed the scoring.

The Cougars outshot their opponents 37-27. Burke Hood allowed just one goal in the Giants nets and was picked as the game’s first star and Ravensbergen was also outstanding as the second star.

The Cougars were without their top-line right winger Terik Parscak, who missed Sunday’s game with an upper-body injury. Parascak was injured in Saturday’s game in Everett when he took a high hit from Silvertips forward Jesse Heslop.

Cats forward Evan Groening served the third game of a four-game suspension for an elbowing major and game misconduct in the game on Wednesday (March 5) in Wenatchee.

The Cougars, who won five out of six games on their roadtrip, are back home this weekend to play the Wenatchee Wild Friday and Saturday at CN Centre.
