Duchess Park advances to provincial volleyball semifinal

Condors will face South Kamlops Titans at Langley Events Centre

The Duchess Park Condors kept their title hopes alive at the BC Secondary School Sports Association double-A boys volleyball championship Thursday afternoon in Langley.

They needed a fifth and deciding set but they got what they were after, defeating the Surrey Christian Falcons 3-2 (24-26, 28-26, 19-25, 25-19, 15-13) to advance to the semifinal round.

The Condors will face the South Kamloops Titans Friday at 5:30 p.m..

The Titans lived up to their nickname while sweeping the D.P. Todd Trojans in the three straight sets, 25-18, 25-18, 25-14.

“The probabilily of (South Kamloops) winning it all is very high,” said Trojans head coach Jonathan Lawrence. “They’re a very good team and they’re huge. I was talking to their coach and they set at one point on their front line they have three guys and all of them touch 11-foot-five. They’re super-deep and they all serve really tough and they just overpowered us.”

The Trojans will play Surrey Christian Friday at 4 p.m.. The best D.P. Todd can finish now is fifth.

At the triple-A boys championship in Victoria, the Prince George Polars dropped down to the consolation round after a 3-0 loss to Kitsilano. The Polars are 2-2 at the 16-team tournament.

The top-ranked Cedars Christian Eagles scored a 2-1 win Thursday afternoon over No. 2 Vancouver Christian to remain undefeated at the single-A boys championship in Vancouver and North Vancouver.

Cedars started with straight-set wins over St. Ann’s Academy and Credo Christian.

The Eagles play Nanaimo Christian today at 9 a.m. in a round of 16 elimination playoff.

At the double-A girls provincials in West Vancouver, the Shas Ti Kelly Road Grizzlies started their BC title quest Thursday with a pair of victories, defeating John Barsby 2-1 and Mount Elizabeth 2-0. In their third match of the day the Grizzlies lost 2-1 to Abbotsford Christian.

The Grizzlies face West Point Gray Academy today at 10:30 a.m. in a playoff match.

At the triple-A girls tournament in Dawson Creek, the College Heights Cougars opened against their crosstown rivals, the Duchess Park Condors and scored a 2-1 victory Thursday morning. The Cougars went on to lose 2-0 to Brentwood College, while the Condors rebounded with a 2-1 triumph over Crofton House.

The Prince George Polars are also in Dawson Creek as the third North Central zone team and they fell 2-0 to Stelly’s and 2-0 to L.V. Rogers.

In the late games Thursday, Duchess Park lost 2-0 to Brentwood, College Heights topped Crofton House 2-1 and PGSS dropped  2-1 decision to Charles Hays,

In todays round of 16 matchups, PGSS will face Brentwood at 9 a.m., College Heights takes on Charles Hays at 11 a.m., and Duchess Park meets Stelly’s at 1 p.m.

At the single-A girls tournament in Castlegar/Nelson, Cedars Christian dropped  a 2-1 decision to White Rock Christian in their opener. Cedars also blanked Duncan Christian 2-0 and lost 2-1 to Sparwood in Thursday’s preliminary round.

Cedars will play Vancouver Christian in a playoff today at 11 a.m.
