Max Borovinskiy came back to haunt the Prince George Spruce Kings.
The 17-year-old Vernon Vipers centre, traded by the Kings to Vernon on Nov. 29, picked a fine time to score his first goal of the season. Borovinskiy tied the game 1-1 in the second period on a Vipers power play and Ryan Shostak scored the only goal of the third period to give the hometown Vipers a 2-1 victory.
John Herrington collected his team-leading 14th goal of the season in the first period – the only offence the Spruce Kings could muster in their last game before the Christmas break.
Kings goalie Aaron Trotter had a standout effort as the game’s third star. He stopped 21 of 23 shots. Ethan David picked up the win in the Vernon nets, making 27 saves.
The Kings’ top-ranked powerplay was blanked on five opportunities. Vernon went 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
Prince George (13-9-1-0-0) remains fourth in the Interior Conference. The Vipers improved to 7-12-3-3-0, good for eighth place in the conference standings.
The Spruce Kings will be back in action Dec. 30th and 31st in Wenatchee for a two-game set against the Wild.
