As expected, the Prince George Cougars have selected 15-year-old left-shooting centre Alex Forsberg, a native of Waldheim, Sask., with the first-overall place in the Western Hockey League bantam draft, being held Thursday in Edmonton.
Forsberg, the younger brother of Cougars defenceman Jesse Forsberg, finished third in scoring in the Saskatchewan AAA midget hockey league, for the Beardy's Blackhawks, with 26 goals and 72 points, playing in the league as an under-aged bantam.
The two Forsbergs made history on Thursday -- no brothers have ever before been selected in the first round of the WHL draft. The younger Forsberg is listed at 5-10 and 170 pounds, while the older brother was the 11th overall choice in the 2008 draft and spent his rookie season with the Cougars last winter.
Alex Forsberg turned 15 on Jan. 4, and is not eligible to play in the league full-time until the 2011-12 season, when his brother will be an 18-year-old.
Prince George product Josh Connelly, a defenceman who is the younger brother of Cougars forward Brett Connolly, was taken in the third round (61st overall) by the Kamloops Blazers.
