Canada will play Finland today at 4 p.m. PT to determine who gets to play for gold Saturday at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup U18 hockey tournament in Red Deer.
A win today for Team Canada will guarantee Prince George Cougars centre Riley Heidt and McBride native Tanner Molendyk, a defenceman for the WHL ‘s Saskatoon Blades, will play for a medal at the eight-team tournament.
Both have been regular contributors to Canada’s offence. Through three preliminary-round games, Heidt ranks 11th in tournament scoring with three goals and one assist while Molendyk has a goal and three assists and is 15th on the scoring list.
Canada has outscored its opponents 26-1. The Canadians opened with a 14-0 win over Switzerland, then defeated Slovakia 9-1 and Sweden 3-0.
Finland finished second in Group with a 2-0-1 record. The Finns started with a 4-3 shootout loss to Czechia, then posted 4-1 wins over the United States and Germany.
Czechia (3-0-0) will take on Sweden (2-1-0) in the other semifinal tonight at 7:30 p.m. PT.
