It wasn't the colour of medal Kenny Lally wanted to win in the boxing ring, but it's still a medal.

Lally, a 25-year-old who competes out of Prince George's Inner City Boxing Club, won the bronze medal in the 56-kilogram division on the weekend at the international Cheo Aponte Cup tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

"He had some really good matches and he's really upbeat," said Lally's longtime coach Bob Pegues. "He's pretty happy with the bronze medal. He had two great wins and now he's moving on."

In the preliminary round on Wednesday, Lally beat Kendrick Stewart of the Bahamas in an unanimous decision.

In the quarter-finals, Lally won again in an unanimous decision over Abimael Ortiz of Puerto Rico.

Lally lost the semifinal to Hector Luis Garcia of the Dominican Republic which knocked him out of a chance to compete for the gold medal.

Garcia wound up winning the gold medal in the weight class with a victory over Carlos Rocha of Brazil.

Besides Canada, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic, the other countries involved in the tournament included the United States, Cuba, Venezuela, Chile, Uruguay,

Lally's bronze medal at the 2015 Cheo Aponte Cup matches the bronze he won at the same tournament in 2011.

When he returns to Prince George, Lally, who is representing Canada at the 2015 Pan Am Games July 18-25 in Toronto, will begin adding five or six pounds to his frame which will benefit him this summer.

The fighters he saw in last week will most likely be the same ones who will also be at the Pan Ams.

"Kenny was walking around Puerto Rico and he's still small at his weight," said Pegues.
