Think of it as curling in the summer.
The sport is lawn bowling, and the idea is to throw a ball - or bowl as it is called - and stop it as close as possible to a small white ball called a jack. The bowl has a running surface that causes it to curl as it rolls down the green. So, with practice, players can get the bowl around guards and close to the target.
Members of the Prince George Lawn Bowling Club try to master their skills season after season. Right now, they are looking for new players to join them on the green.
In an effort to attract new faces, the club is offering beginners two free games so they can learn the basics. Playing times are Tuesdays (10 a.m.), Wednesdays (7 p.m.), Thursdays (1 p.m.) and Sundays (2 p.m.). Those who decide to join have two payment options - a $25 annual membership, plus $5 per game, or a $100 annual fee that covers all costs. The season runs from the middle of May to the end of September and includes tournaments in Quesnel (July) and Prince George (August).
With the exception of shoes, the club supplies all the equipment. Shoes should have a flat sole and little grip so they don't damage the green.
Members will provide instruction, and teams are picked prior to each game. Players are asked to arrive 15 minutes before game time.
The Prince George Lawn Bowling Club is located on Third Avenue between Wainwright and Watrous.
