Many happy returns

Peckham back at the Winter Olympics

Most athletes never make it to a single Olympics.

Gerry Peckham, in a different capacity, is attending his fifth.

Peckham is the director of high performance for the Canadian Curling Association and is Canada's team leader at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver and Whistler. Among other duties, he's the guy who'll make sure all the off-ice needs of the Kevin Martin and Cheryl Bernard rinks are met so the players can focus on trying to win gold medals for Canada.

"A team leader role is manager/glorified babysitter," said Peckham, who spent the first 39 years of his life in Prince George and has lived in Ottawa for the past 20. "You're responsible for the entire unit and all the logistics. This time around, we'll have an immediate team entourage of about 18 people, between athletes and coaches and specialty coaches and media attaches and sports psychologists. You can imagine the array of people involved. (The job) is to try and coordinate that into an effective unit."
