Kodiaks Red delivered one sweet performance on Easter weekend.
The 16-and-under boys team from the Prince George Youth Volleyball Club finished first at the 10-team Best of the West tournament in Calgary. At the round-robin event, held at SAIT, the Kodiaks won eight of their nine matches.
Kodiaks Red was the only B.C. entry and suited up against teams from Alberta and Saskatchewan. Wins came against FOG (21-25, 25-13, 15-12), NAVC Black (25-23, 22-25, 15-11), Canuck Black (25-22, 25-19), Canuck Red (25-11, 25-20), MLH (25-23, 25-23), BVC (25-13, 28-26), the Huskies (25-17, 25-23) and Can West (25-19, 25-21). The only team to beat the Kodiaks was Prince Albert, which prevailed in three sets, 25-17, 20-25, 15-13.
In the final points standings, NAVC of Edmonton and Canuck Red from Calgary tied for second spot but NAVC was awarded the higher placing based on a 25-22, 22-25, 15-2 head-to-head result.
At the end of the tournament, an all-star nod went to Christopher Magrath of Kodiaks Red. Magrath's teammates are captain Zach Ohori, Colby Graham, Nick Harding, Cole Johnston, Kyle McKee, Nolan Minck, Dayton O'Neill, Rafael Rodrigues and Matthew Shand. The Kodiaks are coached by Hans Minck and Austin Cromarty.
Next up, the team will compete at provincials May 5-6 in Abbotsford. The Kodiaks will end their season with a May 19-22 appearance at the Western Canadian championships in Calgary.
