Polars serve to zone crown

Who knew Polars could swing tennis racquets? The zone championships for high school tennis were held Tuesday at the Prince George Tennis Club, and the PGSS Polars walked off the courts as overall winners.

Who knew Polars could swing tennis racquets?

The zone championships for high school tennis were held Tuesday at the Prince George Tennis Club, and the PGSS Polars walked off the courts as overall winners. When all the results from singles and doubles matches were tabulated, PGSS topped the four-school field with 87 points.

The senior boys singles final featured Polar versus Polar and saw Chris Jandric edge Isaiah Berra 6-4. In the match for third place, Ahmed Riaz of College Heights defeated Steven Jandric of PGSS 4-2.

In junior boys singles, Ben Shand of College Heights outlasted Tyler MacSemniuk of Duchess Park 4-3 (8-6 in a tiebreaker) to claim the zone title. In the tilt for third place, Duchess Park's Matthew MacSemniuk beat schoolmate Matt Kuc 4-2.

In the senior girls singles final, meanwhile, Isotta Azzarini of PGSS beat Kelly Road's Vivian Meier 6-0. Both players are exchange students, Azzarini from Italy and Meier from Germany. Marie Van Ow of PGSS and Emily Holmes of Duchess Park met in the third-place match and Van Ow prevailed 4-0.

In the boys doubles category, Riaz and Jaren Prichard of College Heights beat Berra and Steven Jandric of PGSS 6-4 in the final. Third place went to PGSS players Chris Jandric and Carl Ewert, who downed Tyler MacSemniuk and Michale Razendes of Duchess Park 4-2.

In the all-PGSS girls doubles final, Van Ow and Iida Kaskinen got past Azzarini and Olivia McClair 4-3 (7-4 in a tiebreaker). College Heights players Kathleen Wubbel and Franziska Rautmann downed Ariel Gilbert and Tiana Mager - also from College Heights - 4-2 to lock up third place.

A total of 38 players participated in the tournament.
