Prince George biathlete Moira Green qualifies for pursuit in IBU Cup debut

In her IBU Cup biathlon debut Wednesday in Ridnaun-Val Ridanna, Italy, Moira Green of Prince George finished 50th in the 7.5-kilometre women’s sprint.

Green shot 8-for-10 (2+0) and finished 2:44.6 behind gold medalist Voldiya Galmace Paulin of France (20:11.3, 0+0).

The 20-year-old Green, who won all three races last month at the world junior trials in Prince George, is tuning up for the IBU Youth/Junior World Championships in Idre Fjall, Sweden Feb. 26-March 5.

The IBU Cup circuit is the next step down from the BMW World Cup tour.

Benita Peiffer of Whistler was the top Canadian in the women’s sprint, finishing 26th (+1:51.0, 1+0).

Peiffer and Green both qualify for the 10 km pursuit on Friday.

In other Canadian results  Janice Grundahl of Regina was 52nd (+2:44.3, 0+0), and Emily Dickson of Burns Lake was 72nd (+4:16.5, 1+2).

The race drew 86 starters.

In the men’s 10 km sprint at Ridnaun, David Zobel of Germany set the pace, winning in 23:43.8 (0+0).

Zachary Connelly of Chelsea, Que., was the top Canadian in 62nd place (+3:01.1, 1+3), Gavin Johnston of Campbell River was 71st (+3:19.6, 0+1) and Daniel Gilfillan of Comox was 92nd (+5:222.3, 2+0).

The men’s race included 100 starters.
