Prince George ski crosser qualifies at World Cup race in Italy

Gavin Rowell of Prince George qualified 22nd Wednesday in the World Cup ski cross men’s event in Innichen, Italy.

The 24-year-old from Prince George is due to race in the seventh heat of the eighth-finals Thursday.

Rowell is coming off a career best seventh-place finish Dec. 12 in Arosa, Switzerland.

Prior to that, his best placing was 14th, set Jan. 21 in Idre Fjall, Sweden.

Rowell started the World Cup season in Val Thorens, France, finishing 22nd on Dec. 6.

Tiana Gairns of Prince George, who won World Cup bronze in March in Switzerland, is not currently racing on the circuit due to a knee injury she aggravated during the summer training season. The 26-year-old is now based at Whistler and hopes to return to racing later this winter.
