The Prince George Spruce Kings continue to tinker in anticipation of the BC Hockey League’s roster deadline on Feb. 10.
The Spruce Kings have signed centre 19-year-old centre Corson Maguire and 18-year-old goaltender Ben Polhill for the rest of the 2024-2025 season.
Maguire, a five-foot-10, 170-pound Toronto native, was the second-leading scorer this season for the Amarillo Wranglers of the North American Hockey League with 14 goals and 16 assists for 30 points in 34 games.
Maguire graduated in 2023 from the Bishop Kearney Selects U18s in Rochester, N.Y., where he scored 32 goals and 53 points in 72 games over two seasons.
“He's a hardworking player who can produce offensively while also playing a well-rounded game,” said Spruce Kings general manager Mike Hawes. “His addition to our forward group really enhances our depth at that position.”
Polhill played 20 games in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League this season with the Estvan Bruins and he had a 3.30 goals-against average and .898 save percentage.
He also played three seasons in the Canadian Sports School Hockey League with Edge School of Calgary.
The native of Cochrane, Alta., stands six-foot-three and weighs 174 pounds.
He joins a crowded crease that includes 17-year-old Ryder Green and 19-year-old Dylan Johnson, added to the roster Dec. 27.
“Ben is big athletic goalie who will come in and battle for the net,” said Hawes. “Healthy internal competition for the net is a good thing and will make our team better.”
Coming off a 7-4 win Saturday over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs that completed a two-game weekend sweep, the Spruce Kings are into the all-star break and have 10 days to prepare for their next game, Wednesday, Jan. 22 when they host the Surrey Eagles.
The Kings’ office at Kopar Memorial Arena will re-open on Monday Jan. 20th at 9 a.m.
