Spruce Kings/TWolves join forces this weekend

Free game tickets, tailgate party bringing hockey/basketball fans together to cheer on their teams

Fans of junior hockey and university basketball will get to double their pleasure this weekend.

The Prince George Spruce Kings and UNBC Timberwolves are joining forces in a doubleheader weekend promotion to showcase their teams this coming Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

The Spruce Kings will be playing the Victoria Grizzlies Saturday at 6 p.m. in the second game of a weekend doubleheader and the Kings have invited the UNBC community to join in the fun in the stands.

And if you’re a UNBC student, staff or faculty member it won’t cost you a cent to watch both games.

There’s a bus leaving at 5:30 p.m. Saturday from the Northern Sport Centre at UNBC to bring fans to Kopar for the hockey game. Tickets are free if you download the Showpass app on your phone. Then when you get to the game, just show your UNBC identification to get through the gate. The Shopass app/ID will also get you into the gym on Sunday.

Sunday’s festivities start with a tailgate party and barbecue at 1 p.m. at the Northern Sport Centre, where fans can meet the T-wolves basketball players as they get set to face the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack of Kamloops later that afternoon.

The women’s game starts at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 4.

Both UNBC teams are on the road Friday to open the U SPORTS Canada West Conference season in Kamloops against the UBC-Okanagan Heat (Women at 5 p.m., men at 7 p.m.).

Spruce Kings split in Powell River

The Spruce Kings made the trek up the Sunshine Coast this past weekend and got what they came for Friday in a 5-1 BC Hockey League victory over the Powell River Kings.

Lucas Veilleux led the way with two goals. Carter Hesselgrave, Linden Makow and Indiana native Will Moore, with his first BCHL goal, also scored for Prince George.

Carter Wishart made 28 saves in goal for Prince George to notch his third win of the season.

It was a different story in the rematch on Saturday and Powell River topped the Spruce Kings 5-2.

Christian Maro scored a hat trick, while Tre Peck and Alex Lofgren fired singles to spice the Powell River offence. Maro’s third goal came at the end into an empty net. Veilleux and Mason Loewen were the Prince George marksmen.
