Treasure out of world junior medal hunt

Confined quarters and a spiked leg grounded Alyx Treasure early in her high jump attempts Friday at the IAAF world junior track and field championships in Moncton, N.B.

Confined quarters and a spiked leg grounded Alyx Treasure early in her high jump attempts Friday at the IAAF world junior track and field championships in Moncton, N.B.

The 18-year-old Prince George Track and Field Club member was eliminated in the third round at the 31-athlete event, stopping well short of her personal best of 1.82 metres.

"It was quite disappointing," said Tom Masich, Treasure's PGTFC coach. "I'm not disappointed in Alyx, I'm disappointed in how things were set up there. She did not take well to that."

The setup of the high jump area in Moncton placed the mats for each pool of athletes side-by-side, separated by only a few metres. The men's discus event was also in progress in close proximity to the high jump, which limited the space Treasure had to take a run at the bar.

The competition opened with the bar set at 1.65 metres. Treasure waited until it was at 1.70m and cleared that easily but was unable to make it over the next progression -- 1.74m -- and was eliminated.
