UNBC’s soccer striker Michael Henman has been named one of three finalists for Sport BC’s post-secondary Male Athlete of the Year Award for 2023.
The 25-year-old Victoria native earned himself a spot in the U SPORTS Canada West record book when he tied the all-time single season record with 19 goals in the 2022-23 season.
Five of those goals were game winners and he posted four hat-tricks to become the Timberwolves career goal and points record-holder. Henman added to that all-time total in 2023-24 with five goals and two assists to cap his university soccer career.
“I feel very proud to be nominated," said Henman. "I hope that UNBC and the Victoria Highlanders FC get credit as well because I would not be in this position without them.
“It always feels good to get recognition but I really think about everyone I've surrounded myself with over the years and how they have helped me get here. Being recognized as a potential post-secondary athlete of the year is very special to me because there was a time where sport was not possible for me because of my mental health. It's a special moment for me."
Also on the finalists list in Henman’s category are UBC football player Theo Benedet of North Vancouver and UBC track and field athlete Rowan Hamilton of Chilliwack.
Each year, Sport BC recognizes the best of amateur sports in the province, including athletes, coaches, teams, and officials. Each finalist was nominated by their provincial or multi-sport organization, high school, college or university.
The awards event is scheduled for Thursday, March 7 at the Fairmont Hotel in Vancouver.
