WINNIPEG — A proposed regional planning framework for Winnipeg and 17 surrounding municipalities is not going ahead.
Members of the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region have voted to not forward Plan 20-50 to the Manitoba government for approval.
The group is now aiming to develop a new planning framework by 2027.
Plan 20-50 was aimed at setting out planning and guidelines for infrastructure such as roads, housing and transit, and help communities collaborate on economic development.
The plan ran into opposition from some municipal councils who said it would remove decision-making from the local level.
The Manitoba NDP government, elected last year, has put forward a bill to make membership in the regional body voluntary and has signalled that it will allow the group more time to develop a plan.
