LEÓN, Mexico — The Women's Revelations Cup is turning into a tournament of lessons for Canada's under-17 women's soccer team.
Despite getting an early goal from Renee Watson on Saturday, Canada dropped a 4-1 decision to host Mexico.
Captain Sophie Murdock was shown a red card in the 35th minute, making it tough to do much against the hosts.
Alice Soto scored twice for Mexico, while Giselle Espinoza and Layla Sirdah added singles.
“It's a really good lesson for us, we started really brightly in the game, (but) when you get a red card so early it's always difficult," said Emma Humphries, Canada Soccer's women's U-17 coach.
"We can't control red cards and these things could happen to us in the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, so the girls have learned so many lessons from experiencing that."
Canada lost its tournament opener 1-0 to Colombia on Wednesday
The Women’s Revelations Cup is an international tournament featuring four nations that are all preparing for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2022. This tournament is an important development step toward future CONCACAF and FIFA youth competitions at the U-17 and U-20 levels and more importantly a step toward competing at the international level for Canada Soccer’s women’s national team.
Canada will conclude its Cup tournament against Chile on Tuesday.
