The commemoration of the life of Elroy Garden and the dedication of Garden Drive and Garden Park takes place Friday at 10 a.m. at Garden Park for the sign unveiling.

The Garden family will be joined by friends, family, Mayor Shari Green and members of city council for the formal unveiling of the Garden Park sign at 20th Avenue and Garden Drive.

The city will also display a historic places plaque with photos that will describe the highlights of Elroy Garden's contributions to Prince George.

The plaque will say:

Elroy Garden's Legacies

As a businessman and exemplary good citizen, Elroy Garden made lasting contributions to the life of Prince George.

Elroy and Elda Garden moved here in 1952 from Nova Scotia and built a life for their family.

Elected as alderman in 1965, he served on city council during the mayoral tenures of Garvin Dezell and Harold Moffat.

As a candidate for mayor himself in the 1971 election, he campaigned for adequate police and fire protections, pollution control and parks beautification.

It was Elroy Garden's suggestions which named the Four Season Pool and Vanier Hall.

During the June 1, 1970 city council meeting, he and Jack Heinrich proposed that the city set aside a property reserve to protect land on Cranbrook Hill for future development of a university campus.

He was an active member of Rotary and the Knights of Columbus. Known as "Mr. Hospitality", Elroy Garden made Prince George a welcoming place for all he met.

This park and street are respectfully dedicated in memory of his life in our city.
