A man suspected of confronting a security guard with a hatchet during a robbery of a store at Pine Centre Mall is in custody.

Kevin Corey Roy, 29, has been charged with one count each of robbery, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and resisting a peace officer.

He was arrested Tuesday morning shortly after Prince George RCMP were called to a report of a male and a female leaving the Shoppers Drug Mart with a basket full of items.

Roy is alleged to have brandished the hatchet on the way out.

“Within 10 minutes of police receiving the report, frontline members had the male suspect in custody. Two minutes later police arrested the female suspect, as well," Cst. Jennifer Cooper said.

"Prince George RCMP’s Police Dog Service team attended to assist in backtracking where the male suspect traveled and quickly located the discarded hatchet used in the robbery.”

Roy was also charged with breaching probation. In October, he was sentenced to 18 months probation for assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats.

Roy remains in custody while the female was released without charges.
