In the wee hours of Friday morning, excited residents gathered at the Prince George Airport to welcome the first Syrian family sponsored as refugees by the Westwood Church.

Parents Nael and Rose, with children Sara, Bero, and Samo, are the city's newest residents.

It was a long day for the family of five, whose route to Prince George included stops in Toronto and Vancouver.

But, it's been a much longer journey to Canada. Originally from the Mediterranean coast of Syria, they have been living in Lebanon in for the last two years.

Westwood Church, which sponsored them, learned of the family's arrival date just days before. Members have made ready a fully furnished apartment, complete with a pantry of familiar foods.

Citizen photographer Brent Braaten was there to capture the emotional arrival.
