Twenty-eight Van Bien elementary school Red Cedar Readers participated in this year's Battle of the Books. Congratulations to Brooke, Zoey, Isaac, Brianna, Brooklyn, Kendra, Jakob and Haley for helping their teams reach a first and second place finishes. Division 5, 6, and 7 students enjoyed a Science in Motion presentation where they spent a day learning about dinosaurs. There were many hands-on activities for the students to explore as they learned about these mighty creatures. Students are looking forward to the the Great Van Bien Easter Egg Drop on Thursday. Students are encouraged to construct a container which will keep an egg from breaking when it is dropped from the gym roof.

Music Monday is an annual national event that brings together thousands of students, musicians, parents and community members across Canada to celebrate the gift of music in our lives. Families and friends are welcome to attend Quinson elementary school's second annual Music Monday Celebration at 1 p.m. May 2 in our school gym. The celebration will be about an hour and 20 minutes long. All music classes will be performing a selection from their class repertoire. Performances will include: songs and rhymes, recorder selections, dances, and ORFF arrangements. Each performance will be prefaced with students talking about the importance of music in their lives. The assembly will conclude with a performance of Serena Ryder's song, Sing, Sing Music. The Coalition for Music Education in Canada launched Music Monday in 2005 and it is now also celebrated in the U.S., Australia and Hungary.

Westwood elementary school students have shown impressive global citizenship as of late. The total raised for Japanese relief was $431.05. Grade 6 students presented SPCA manager Ann Gough with a cheque for $257.32 during her recent visit. Ann provided students with a short presentation about the SPCA, it's role in the community and its many needs. Money raised by students will go towards veterinary costs. This week is an active one for students. Teams are starting to gear up for elementary relays by practicing at recess and lunch. Grade 4 and 5 classes will be heading to the pool on Thursday while the Grade 6 and Grade 7 classes will be rockin' and rollin' at the Roll-A-Dome. In keeping with the theme of rock and roll, author Sigmund Brouwer, enticed Grade 6 and 7 students to read and write through music in his captivating Rock and Roll Literacy Show. Mrs. Parker and her Red Cedar team went into the Battle of the Books thinking quality not quantity, as lone soldier Cassidy fought hard for Westwood. Her efforts were rewarded with a fourth place finish. Mrs. Bouchard's K/1 students have taken part in art sessions with some of the volunteers from the Retired Teachers' Association. Westwood PAC is getting into the school spirit through a T-shirt drive.
