Can't sleep

Since the day I heard about the school closure recommendations in Prince George, I haven't had a decent night's sleep. I am the parent of a first grade student at Nukko Lake elementary. I drive my child to school every morning, because we are too close to the school to take the bus, and that's OK with us. To everyone who thinks that a 'Mega School' will be a more cost efficient way to educate our children, I offer this. There is an innocence about a child who goes to a small school, be it in town or in the country. In a world that is booming with growth and technology, why should our children have to grow up so quickly? I am all too aware that at the tender age of six, my son will adapt to his new surroundings if the final decision is to close our rural school. The point is, why should he have too. He goes to the newest elementary school in Prince George. I am on the 'save our school committee' at Nukko Lake and we are trying to come up with ideas, to present to the board, at our meeting on Feb. 22, to cut back the budget, in hopes that there is a fighting chance to save our school. When I dropped my child off at school yesterday morning, I witnessed not one, but two school board employees, outside the school, changing the flags. Yes, that's right, apparently, that is a two man job. In these uncertain times, I hate to see people lose there jobs, but lets face it... Superintendent Pepper stated that "cuts have to be made" so lets start right there, in maintenance. I would have happily changed those flags for free, because I was there anyway.

Thanks for listening,
