Clan system designed to support, not dominate

Re: editorial from Nov. 17, entitled Destiny's tragic ending. I do appreciate the article and bringing light to this very real ongoing issue. I am however not impressed with the reference to "the Father Clan.

I do appreciate the article and bringing light to this very real ongoing issue. I am however not impressed with the reference to "the Father Clan."

As a Carrier woman, as was Destiny Tom, I can tell you that domestic abuse was a learned behaviour. Our culture does not encourage us to endure this type of abuse. Before we were colonized women were held in high respect as we are "life givers."

Communities that have strong cultural ties suffer less abuse of any type. Our clan system is designed to provide support to one another not to dominate one over the other.

I feel that the reporter that spoke with Destiny's mother had taken her reference to the Father Clan out of context. Just to be clear women being dominated by men is not part of our culture. Typically the church encourages women to commit to men regardless of the situation.
