Free Greyhound pass a better option

On reading Mr. Cameron's letter, I was somewhat dismayed.

I did not realize that our city was going to contribute $50,000 on a service that would be totally under-used.

A better solution would be to issue plasticized and pictured ID cards to anyone that qualified for one. These could be used to purchase fare on the Greyhound to any westerly destination.

If the card is used we're only stuck with the fare, if not used it costs us nothing.

This would be far better than having a dedicated bus for this purpose. It would also enhance Greyhound's bottom line, hence better service.

Since these cards could be numbered for accounting purposes, it would not be hard to keep track of usage. There would be no charge for obtaining a card which could be done at the provincial motor vehicle office (driver's license office).

If they want to give a free ride, at least let's keep it economical. I don't like the idea of a person out there on the road being in a defenseless position for some predator to come along and harm them.

Ban hitchhiking within 10 kilometres of city limits. It's done by the jail so it's constitutionally possible.

Why is it we have to complicate everything?
