I would like to weigh in on the characterization of Cameron Stolz and the appropriateness of his candidacy for city council. For whatever reason, 10 years ago Mr. Stolz found himself delinquent on paying the taxes on property he owns. Once this became public knowledge, he quite correctly resigned from positions where trust might be perceived to be an issue. I am sure the circumstances for him were embarrassing and he must have suffered personal grief over the situation.
His error was delinquency in payment of a bill. He did not cheat, steal, lie or deceive. He was not guilty of sexual indiscretions, racially discriminating remarks or lewd behaviour. He was only guilty of being tardy in paying his bills.
The community reacted by saying “shame, shame on you” and decisively rejected his bid for city council in 2014 and again in 2018. I like many others did not vote for Mr. Stolz in either of those elections. Now again in 2022 Mr. Stolz once again is a candidate hopeful. Hopeful to carry on in a job that he obviously loves. One might ask after two unsuccessful attempts why would he even try a third time? The man must be foolish or enviably courageous.
Although he is only a passing acquaintance to me, I know that Mr. Stolz is not a fool. He is demonstrating an incredible will to serve. I believe because of the circumstances surrounding his candidacy Mr. Stolz understands the burden of public trust more than any other candidate on the slate. I think he has shown an incredible desire for a second chance. It is the kind of courage he is demonstrating that will be is needed at city hall in the coming days. I also believe that Prince George is a mature and forgiving community and can see the value of a person’s character and beliefs. This time I plan on supporting his bid for election.
Finally, this situation brings to mind a quote from the Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde: “The only difference between a saint and a sinner is that every saint has a past and every sinner a future.”
