Recently I became aware of a decision made by Prince George Minor Hockey in regards to no "body checking" in the Midget "Club" division.
I find this proposed solution a little alarming as I would hope that a decision which involves a majority would have majority input.
Hockey players not in favor of "body checking" can play in a division without checking (House). This does not mean players in "House" will never become injured as we are all aware that hockey is played on ice with sticks and pucks.....Should we take those items away because they are dangerous? A player with a temper packing a stick can create a pretty scary situation. It's about control of the game on every level. The older the player gets the faster and more physical the game becomes with or without "body checking". Accidents happen; it's about determining what is accidental and what is intentional and disciplining accordingly in a consistent manner.
I completely understand that player safety is the biggest concern when dealing with on ice infractions. I have never met a parent or coach who enjoys seeing a player hurt. I do believe safety is the main objective of PGMH. Although I am unsure how this decision could have a positive outcome as this is potentially weakening hockey in the long run.
I am aware that for overall player development players must be exposed to all aspects of the game. Is this not what we pay for when we register our children in hockey?
If PGMH wants to eliminate "body checking" from "club" hockey they should offer hockey at a discounted price as you certainly are not getting the development you are paying for.
I fear that if this decision is only a Prince George issue what will happen to our players when they are involved in games outside of Prince George?
Our children are at risk of being injured from checks they will sustain from players who are not subjected to the same rules imposed by PGMH. Affiliated "AP" players from "Club" will be at a disadvantage and most likely unable to play at the "Rep" level.
This decision has a negative ripple effect which hurts hockey in Prince George. Who will suffer then?
I feel the decision to remove "checking" from Midget Club is not the solution and the real issue runs much deeper.
