Parents need to take kids' bike riding more seriously

Summer has hit, and the letters to the editor about cyclists are coming in like crazy... Here's another one for you. My issue isn't with adult 'cyclists', it is with children on bikes.

Summer has hit, and the letters to the editor about cyclists are coming in like crazy... Here's another one for you.

My issue isn't with adult 'cyclists', it is with children on bikes. I am shocked at the amount of young children that you see out late at night, on busy roads, with no helmets or regard for others.

Children need guidance, and I am very unimpressed with the obvious lack of parenting here.

If your child wants to ride his/her bike, you need to teach them how to take care of themselves while doing this. This means wearing a helmet, getting off of your bike and walking across a crosswalk, and most importantly, EYE CONTACT with vehicles.

I find most children don't understand the difference between the statements: 'vehicles WILL stop for you' and 'vehicles SHOULD stop for you'.

Tell them that even if the car is at a complete stop, and it seems like they are letting you cross, that they need to make eye contact and be sure that the driver is aware that they are going to cross in front of the vehicle.

Come on, people. Take care of your children!
