Professor Wayne Ross of the University of B.C. spoke on Global morning news (June 3) about an action which could result in the prevention of several problems. Professor Ross claims that research shows reducing class sizes can have a positive impact on high school completion rates, college and university completion rates, reduced incidences of juvenile criminal behavior and reduced incidences of teen pregnancy among other issues.
In other words, reducing class size limits in public schools can not only have immediate consequences of improving student educational experiences and reducing teacher stress but can have a long term effect which could improve life outcomes. This would likely also be cost
effective in the long term.
In a radio interview, Professor Ross also discussed the cost of reducing class size limits in B.C. He does not dispute there are costs involved. However, he disputes the government's claim that they can't afford to do this. He says it is a matter of priorities and I agree. The government needs to set a priority of developing our most valuable resource - our students. They can begin to do this by substantially improving funding for education.
