Speed is killing wildlife

North Kelly Road is not a race track or a drag strip. It's a main road through a rural residential area. Our residents use the road to walk their dogs, ride their bikes, jog and simply walk for exercise. The speed limit is 50 km/h, not 80 or 100.

Our residents use the road to walk their dogs, ride their bikes, jog and simply walk for exercise. The speed limit is 50 km/h, not 80 or 100. We have a variety of wildlife which use the road as well but the majority of drivers do not take that into consideration when they speed, especially at night.

Last night, we heard the collision between a vehicle and a moose over the sound of our TV. The driver stopped and several other drivers stopped probably to offer assistance but were waved on. The driver then left. We took flashlights outside and found the young moose stunned in the bush. A quick call to the RCMP brought out an officer who located the moose several feet back in the bush. It had sustained a broken leg and no doubt had severe internal injuries. Shots rang out and we lost another moose.

Please, people , slow down and watch. We share our rural lifestyle with a lot of wildlife. This is their home, too.
