To our MLAs,
My interest in things political has vanished over the past few years. The concept of being a "politician-representative of the people" has sadly, over the past decades, been replaced by "politician - representative of the party." The ominous trend we have seen in many jurisdictions, particularly in British Columbia, has been the further subversion of the term to "politician - servant of the leader."
My comments are personal and my comments do reflect observations and conversations related to my occupation as manager of a local small business. The HST will cost the business money. The HST will cost my employees money. In conversations with staff, owners and accountants I have not encountered one person who has spoken in favour of this tax for the average B.C. taxpayer.
Recall your position regarding the deficit prior to last year's election. Recall your position on implementing the HST prior to last year's election. Recall the improbability of the referendum gaining support of 10 per cent of eligible voters in all ridings. Recall that this form of grassroots rejection of legislation is unprecedented. Recall the arrogance of your caucus not even bothering to register with Elections BC so you could attempt to provide the rationale for adopting the HST. Recall the stupidity of closing debate on the legislation so that the purported benefits could have been newsworthy items as they were debated on the legislative floor. Recall the relief in the face and voice of Blair Lekstrom as he came to that point of decision where he realized he was a politician, not a politician.
Now recall your situation. If you listen to the voices of your constituents you will gain internal peace, credibility and respect. Recall the leader you are serving. Recall the way he has treated you, your caucus and the people of this province.
I would suggest you take a few minutes to recall all of these thoughts. Along with many of your constituents, I want to let you know that when it comes to recall, I'm thinking about it too.
