Trudeau shouldn't have caved to 'nasty little neocons'

Re: "Tired of Trudeau," letter to The Citizen, Dec 6.

Is Ms. Ballum using the royal plural when she rebukes the Trudeaus, father and son, for their public view of Fidel Castro?

She says: "What Trudeau Sr. did in regards to Castro we do not want to see relived..." and referring to Justin, "We're all tired of the theatrics." Ms. Ballum, please don't speak for others locally or nationally, many of whom, while fully cognizant of Castro's tyranny, still strongly admire the man for liberating his country from one of the score of U.S.-backed Latin American dictatorships of the mid-20th century.

Yes, Castro acted brutally against presumed enemies but that was at least in part because of the very real and constant threats of the giant enemy a few hundred kilometres north of Havana to overthrow the revolution and return Cuba to its status as a plaything and brothel for American businessmen.

My qualm - and I say mine, not our - with Justin Trudeau's handling of Castro's death was not with the fitting tribute he made, but the later, cowardly political decision not to attend the state funeral, in contrast to Fidel's honouring of his father. In doing this he caved in to the likes of our Canadian Trump-wannabee Kellie Leitch and other forgettable nasty little neocons.
