The Site C hydroelectric project has brought its fourth generating unit online.
With this new unit now operational, two-thirds of the project’s total generating capacity is online, further strengthening British Columbia's energy supply, BC Hydro announced Wednesday, April 2.
“This is a huge achievement for everyone involved in Site C,” said Adrian Dix, minister of energy and climate solutions. “The addition of another generating unit is a key milestone in our efforts to build a secure, sustainable supply of clean, affordable, and reliable electricity for British Columbia’s future.”
The Site C project has been steadily advancing since the first generating unit came online in October 2024. The second unit followed in December, with the third unit joining the grid in February. Now, with the fourth unit up and running, each unit contributes more than 180 megawatts of electricity, enough to power approximately 80,000 homes.
BC Hydro has also begun testing and commissioning the fifth generating unit, with plans to have all six units operational by the fall of 2025.
The dam is located on the Peace River, 14 kilometre southwest of Fort St. John and about 80 kilometres downstream from the W.A.C. Bennett Dam.
Once fully operational, Site C is expected to provide enough clean energy to power nearly 500,000 homes and increase BC Hydro’s electricity supply by eight per cent.
