A special School District 57 board meeting wrapped up in under five minutes Wednesday, April 16 as trustees met virtually to officially receive public feedback on the proposed closure of Giscome Elementary School.
Chair Craig Brennan called the meeting to order at 6 p.m., lightheartedly noting he nearly hosted the meeting from his greenhouse due to the warm spring weather.
The sole agenda item was a procedural step in the district’s review of Policy 7550, which covers the opening and closing of schools. Specifically, the discussion focused on Giscome Elementary, which the board is considering closing at the end of the 2024-25 school year.
The board heard all public and staff feedback had been compiled in the board’s meeting package, including notes from a community meeting in Giscome and a site visit. No additional feedback was received during the formal 60-day consultation period, which closes on Saturday, April 19, the board heard.
The final decision on Giscome Elementary’s future is expected next week.
“This is not a decision we take lightly,” said Brennan, noting the final vote on whether to close the school will take place at another special meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 22, at 6 p.m. via Zoom.
With no further discussion from trustees, the meeting was adjourned.
