Many travellers come to Kamloops as a brief juncture to stop and rest before carrying on to the various natural wonders encompassed within B.C.’s remarkable interior.
But, nestled alongside the North and South Thompson Rivers, the stunning landscape beacons to visitors from all over to stop and stay for premium wines and explorative tours of a unique and emerging wine tourist region.
“We were the first winery to open in Kamloops so we spearheaded the wine industry in the area…the property came about in 2007 and we purchased it solely with the idea to grow grapes and eventually have a winery, which we did,” said Vicki Collett.
Vicki and her husband have been running the Harper’s Trail Winery since 2013 and she is elated this new region is finally gaining the notoriety and momentum it deserves.
“I am definitely excited about the Thompson Valley region, it is a very exciting new region and I expect that in the future there will be many more wineries in our area, especially on the South Thompson just because of where we are situated.”
The winery sits on the North side of the South Thompson River on a south-facing slope, which is perfect for grape growing, producing some of the most unique tastes found in B.C. And soon, after years of operating, the area will have its own claim to fame.
“This region is going to have its own designation very shortly, it is going to be the Thompson Valley Wine region so we will be able to put that on our label.”
The Kamloops’s Wine Trail is a group of three wineries in the surrounding vicinity and Harper’s Trail is usually the middle stop on tours, which is the perfect excuse to sit on the patio and enjoy the early afternoon sun. The winery is also pet and family-friendly and has bus and RV parking, with availability for event and group bookings.
